Tunisia, Egypt… Congo?

February 27, 2011

Joseph Kabila, current DRC president

In case you stay up to date on the news coming out of DRC, Katie and I just wanted to let you all know that we are safe and sound.  As described in this BBC article, there was what they are calling an attempted coup today in which the president’s residence was attacked.  Although his residence is not far from where we live and we could hear the gun shots from a distance, we are fine and nothing came towards our direction.  In fact, when it all happened we were visiting some friends at a US Embassy residential compound nearby, probably one of the safer places to be.  We’re back at our house now, the security officer for the Embassy says the situation is currently “calm but unstable”, and at this point we will both be heading to work tomorrow.  We are both interested to see how the events of today will effect the vibe within the city tomorrow, and will keep you all posted to any interesting developments.
